Tell us a little of my spiritual background and end-times journey?
Ok, here goes.
Ever since I was 12 years old, and could understand "end times" teachings, I was enthralled by it. It just captivated me to think of the "rapture" and the Tribulation that I wanted to remain out of and save all my friends from.
As I got older I bought every book Hal Lindsey wrote and read them cover to cover. I recorded Jack Van Impe every week and sat on the edge of my seat as he spoke his prophecy expertise!
When the "Left Behind" series came out I was overjoyed! Sure it was fiction, but these men gave a glimpse of how I believed it might very well be during this terrible time called the Tribulation. I recommended those books to everyone! Especially those who I thought would be "left behind" should Jesus come in our lifetime!
Surely Jesus was coming in our lifetime too right? I mean look at the weather! Look at the government upheavals! Look at the money situation getting closer and closer to some sort of chip! The cashless society was on the way! I scoured websites that told me how close we had to be because of all of the signs.
I LOVED THIS STUFF, and because I loved it I could expect a special reward! After all Revelation tells us that those who anxiously await His appearance will receive a special crown! WOW, I was really looking forward to it so I was sure that crown was mine.
Another thing about my faith however was this. I have always been passionate about keeping the commandments of the Lord. Not in a legalistic way mind you, but because I love Him and the bible tells us over and over again that if we love the Lord we will keep His commandments.
Sadly, it seemed so few Christians felt this way. The prevailing attitude seemed to be "I'm saved so everything's cool". The "seeker sensitive" movement seemed to water down the gospel even more as I looked for a solid church for YEARS (over 10). Everything was "the feel good gospel".
As I got more and more discouraged I learned one thing. Discussing the "end times" with the same people worked! They always seemed willing to go into lengthy discussions on the rapture and tribulation. They would talk for HOURS about "Left Behind" and things similar to that. So hey, I thought, I will delve more into that!
I got to the point to where I considered myself an expert on all things "end times". Fellow church members and sometimes-even pastors to speak about what I learned called me upon! I spent HOURS on Rapture Ready and other places like that talking about the headlines and signs of the times!
Again though, as I ventured into other parts of scripture I found myself not getting the attention, not getting the discussion and report with people. If I wanted to talk about Christians not seeing filthy R rated movies, I was shunned and told not to judge. If I wanted to discuss women not holding positions in leadership over men in the church I was shunned. If I wanted to say how divorce was wrong, I was shunned! But hey Adam, tell us more about the Rapture! This always confused me.
I ventured out of my domain on the Internet after being BANNED from Rapture Ready for discussing things like I mentioned in the above paragraph. I found the Puritan Board. Wow, these people were what I was looking for! They believed a Christian should act like one! They believed a Christian should not be involved in blatantly worldly things! They believed what I had always felt and had begun thinking no one else in Christendom did.
After spending some quality time on this board and getting to know the Godly people there I decided to share my wealth of knowledge on the end times in their forum for such discussions. What I found shocked me! No one believed what I did (save maybe 1-2 people). What was this? Im not talking about pre-mid-or post Trib either! No, these people didnt even believe in a Millennium! I was aghast!
Being the person that I am (bold) I stepped in and called them on it. I couldnt allow what I believed to be completely unbiblical stand. But thankfully, my friends there were merciful to me. No one threatened to ban me; no one gave me a warning. Instead they walked me through what they believed, gave me biblical passages, asked me to find biblical passages that said what I believed, and recommended books for me to read. I especially have to thank one Mr. Paul Manta; this man patiently took me through question after question. He remained calm with me in the face of my ranting and implying that he was a loon!
My friends walked me through Partial Preterism and why it was biblical. I was asked to show proof texts of the weather getting worse or earthquakes increasing were signs of the end. I couldnt do it. (Its not in the bible). I was asked to show proof texts of a third temple being built. I couldnt do it. (Its not in there). I was asked to explain how Jesus saying, This Generation shall not pass until all these things are fulfilled. I couldnt do it. (You cant either unless you twist the scripture or change the meanings of words).
I studied with a new perspective! I also learned that many famous and respected theologians believed in Preterism as well! I bought a book Last Days Madness by Gary DeMar. WOW, Mr. DeMar defends this view far more biblically that Hal Lindsey defends his!
I felt duped! No one ever taught me this view my entire life. No one ever taught about the fall of Jerusalem in school or church. Why was this? Why had I never even been presented with this idea?
I am still studying Partial (or Orthodox) Preterism. I have much to learn! But now I know it is an option and a viable one at that. It is now my mission to see that no believer goes without hearing it. They can choose what they will believe, but I will do my best to see that they have a choice. And it is a BIBLICAL one, not one based on News Paper headlines and prophecy experts who update their books every time the world landscape changes.
I pray you look into it and decide for yourself. Let no one answer for you!
-In Christ!
